Mobilizing Digital Navigators

Closing the Digital Divide

Because the digital divide is much more significant with the more rural mountain communities of Western North Carolina, providing mobility of the following assets is needed:

  • Computers, Chromebooks
  • Tech Knowledge
  • Hotspots and/or Mobile Access Points

Having a regular event at consistent locations would be effective in implementing ideas to improve digital inclusion and minimize the digital divide.

We know schools have been successful in implementing school buses with Wi-Fi.

Why can’t mobility be provided throughout the year to strategic community locations like libraries, town centers, or churches?

Airbnb Wi-Fi

Internet Speed is Important for Travelers

Although Wi-Fi availability has been available for hosts to list within the Airbnb app; the app now includes a speed test tool so hosts can also access the tool within the Airbnb app.

With Asheville and Western North Carolina being a top tourist destination, broadband speed is one of the attributes that travelers look for. Also, Airbnb continues to try to attract remote workers and Wi-Fi speed is even more important for this demographic.

Testing your wifi using your Airbnb app

In a host account, the user will find the speed test under the “Amenities” section of a listing and will only an estimate your download speeds.

  • Tap Profile and then tap Switch to hosting
  • Tap Listings and tap the listing you want
  • Under About the listing go to Amenities
  • Next to Popular, tap Edit
  • Go to Wifi, tap Add your wifi speed
  • Run the wifi test and then tap Save

When the user completes a speed test, the app will share that information with Airbnb and M-Lab, an organization that provides Airbnb to the open-source software.

Hendersonville Library Internet

Broadband is Available at the Henderson County Library

Above are photographs I took on a journey to the Hendersonville Public Library. As a resident of Asheville (without a vehicle), I made a the journey with an Asheville electric bus ride to the airport and transferred to the Apple Country Transit. The Apple Country bus ride took me to Downtown Hendersonville; and then I took a short ~3 block walk to the Henderson County Public Library at 301 North Washington St.

I was enlightened to find the library open and that free internet resources were available indoors.

Computer Help and a Printer

The Hendersonville Library has a Technology Desk with staffing available to assist with your connectivity and basic tech inquiries. Color and black & white printing is also available for a nominal fee.

Internet Basics

Effectively leveraging broadband can provide economic, health, and education benefits. At the core of broadband is high speed internet that delivers website, video, and other content.

But what if you or you know of somebody that knows little to nothing about the internet and how it provides connectivity in our world?

  • Searching for community help?
  • Securely reading email, online finance, social media?
  • Effectively using your web browser?
  • Looking for employment opportunities?
  • Understanding the cloud?

Where does the Internet Come From?

The Internet – An Enormous System of Cables Connecting Computers in the World

Simply put, the internet is a network of computers that allow you to go online.

The World Wide Web is a collection of websites that can be accessed through the internet. Interaction with a website requires the use of a web browser or app installed on your computer device.

With a web browser like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, or others; a user is able to communicate with email and social media, shop, get information, and more.
