Telemedicine’s Future

Telemedicine is defined by Wikipedia as the distribution of health-related services and information via electronic information and telecommunication technologies.

It allows long-distance patient and clinician contact, care, advice, reminders, education, intervention, monitoring, and remote admissions.

COVID has brought new visions in the healthcare industry and telemedicine is changing the healthcare landscape:

  1. Telemedicine will become a standard service offered across all care settings
  2. Patients will choose providers, health systems, and hospitals based on telemedicine access
  3. Medical facilities that embrace telemedicine will see business and revenue growth
  4. Telemedicine will become an efficient option for preventative care
  5. Access to specialists will become the norm, which will benefit hospital wait times

With the WNC Broadband Project team we continue to educate the communities on the digital divide and the need for digital inclusion for everybody in WNC to have high speed internet access or broadband for telemedicine to be effectively leveraged.

Broadband & Community Health

Referencing several Western North Carolina counties, broadband adoption is corelated to health disparities.

A disproportionate number of individuals in the study area live without access to basic health care services and access to specialists, such as cardiologists, because of distance and limited provider availability.

Health care access is improved in areas where broadband and telehealth services exist.

Patients are more aware of their conditions and equipped with self-management techniques to seek medical care when concerns arise.

Call for Action on Neglected Policy Proposals

NC faith leaders make a call for action on neglected policy proposals, including broadband access.

The health needs and education needs of North Carolinians are writ large by the coronavirus pandemic, forcing us to adapt on both fronts.

A major piece of this adaptation depends on the internet. Without high-speed internet, the sick cannot consult physicians and the children cannot complete school assignments.

In much the way that the Rural Electrification Act transformed our landscape from darkness to light in the mid-20th century, broadband access can transform shrinking worlds into endless horizons now in the 21st century.

The ripple effects of such an initiative will extend far beyond health and education into most sectors of the economy.
