Digital Citizenship

What are the Attitudes & Behaviors Around the Internet?

The pandemic has dramatically changed the world, making our lives more digital and changing our attitudes and behaviors around the internet.

Jaya Baloo, Chief Information Security Officer at Avast

How has COVID-19 impacted digital activity? What are the key global findings?

  • Many people will continue to stay online.
  • The internet has been more educational.
  • As online populations grow, so do data project concerns around privacy and security.
  • Lack of understanding and knowledge about digital literacy remain high.
  • Dating sports classes, and banking moved to the online world in greater numbers.

Portrait of a Digital Citizen defines digital citizenship as “a person who develops the skills and knowledge to effectively use the internet and other digital technology, especially in order to participate responsibly in social and civic activities.”

At the core of digital citizenship, privacy is a top and growing topic.

Local groups including the ‘Experienced Workforce Initiative’ or Asheville 50+ Works are seeing more and more people become internet converts with video conferencing, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other platforms.

The ‘Digital Literacy Network’ of Buncombe County started in June of 2021 and has seen 2000+ website hits in itself.

The internet has grown to become an indispensable tool to help everyone maintain normal lives with educational, employment, social, and telemedicine thanks to high speed internet.

Give back to your Western North Carolina community by volunteering and stewarding digital literacy among your friends, family, and organizations.

Working From Home Digital Literacy

WFH or Working From Home requires knowledge of internet speeds and the factors that contribute to your online experiences. Running a speed test helps to understand:

  • How long will it take to upload and download files?
  • Videos streaming experience?
  • Video conference experience?
    • Video pixelation – is the video optimized to present you and your network as clear as possible?
    • Audio without latency ?
    • No conference dropouts or re-connects?
  • Responsive smartphone, laptop, tablet, or game console use with your home WiFi?
  • IoT – Internet of Things, that work?

Consider running an internet speed test to understand the variables throughout the day including:

  • Time of day
  • Number of users in household online
  • Video demands
  • Weather – for Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) or satellites

The WNC Broadband project is advocating on your behalf for future-proof solutions that provide internet connectivity and digital literacy for all.

Hendersonville Library Internet

Broadband is Available at the Henderson County Library

Above are photographs I took on a journey to the Hendersonville Public Library. As a resident of Asheville (without a vehicle), I made a the journey with an Asheville electric bus ride to the airport and transferred to the Apple Country Transit. The Apple Country bus ride took me to Downtown Hendersonville; and then I took a short ~3 block walk to the Henderson County Public Library at 301 North Washington St.

I was enlightened to find the library open and that free internet resources were available indoors.

Computer Help and a Printer

The Hendersonville Library has a Technology Desk with staffing available to assist with your connectivity and basic tech inquiries. Color and black & white printing is also available for a nominal fee.
