Economic Development Employer Incentives Remote Work Work at home Work Remotely

Economic Development from Remote Workers

What is Economic Development?

Economic development is the creation of wealth from which community benefits are realized.

In the communities of Western North Carolina, remote workers are an element of the creation of wealth. As recognized by CNBC, Asheville ranked 2nd in LinkedIn of small cities in the nation where remote working is most popular.

Economic development is more than a jobs program, it’s an investment in growing your economy and enhancing the prosperity and quality of life for all residents, says the California Association for Local Economic Development (1).

In a post-COVID remote work environment, USA Today reports that nearly 50% of US workers would take a pay cut for remote work benefit.

From an economic development perspective, work-from-home employees are a huge boon to a rural community that has likely been aging and slowly shrinking over time.

Employees making good salaries can provide a huge boost to a local economy.

For years, rural communities have sunk big tax incentives into trying to attract new employers.

It probably costs a lot less to attract one hundred remote workers than to lure a traditional employer that will bring a hundred jobs. (2)

Remote Work Work From Home (WFH) Work Remotely

Future of Remote Work

Remote Work Now

Remote work (also known as work from home [WFH] or telecommuting) is a type of flexible working arrangement that allows an employee to work from remote location outside of corporate offices.

For employees who can complete work offsite, this arrangement can help ensure work-life balance, access to career opportunities or reduced commutation costs.

Benefits for the company include increased employee satisfaction and retention, increased productivity and cost savings on physical resources.

Remote work arrangements can be temporary or permanent, part-time or full-time, occasional or frequent.

Remote work requires policies governing equipment use, network security and performance expectations.

Remote Work’s Future

When you are remote, it allows you to do some parts of your business outside the one or more of the organization’s physical setting.

For example, you can network additional remote freelancing or outside services.

Freelancers are self-employed people who don’t work at a particular company but some are hired for a specific project, service, or task by the client (or conventionally the employer).

You can utilize freelancing platforms where you can see everyone’s past work and you know the ratings those freelancers received from previous clients.

And as a freelancer, you can connect with clients all over the world who don’t know you personally, because they can see what you’ve done.

These platforms already existed, but comfort with remote work will help to unlock their potential.

Transfer of Knowledge

Another interesting thing that businesses are thinking about, and are going to increasingly be looking at, is how does the transfer of knowledge work in your firm when you move to fully remote?

There’s a lot of tacit knowledge in the firm—this is how things work, this is how we do things, this is the way we think about things—and these things are passed on informally, in person.

One of the bigger strategic changes that companies are going to have to make, is to make knowledge more formalized and make processes more formalized, so that you don’t need to rely on oral tradition at the company in order to pass down key knowledge. Companies will rely less on PowerPoint culture and more on a written culture of standard operating procedures and shared technical documentation.

At the core, remote working need fast, dependable internet; also known as broadband. Does your favorite remote work location have dependable broadband? What are your internet backup plans for remote working?
