About the Village Park Initiative

Village Park

The Village Park community is served by a small number of public and private companies that provide telephone, television and internet services. In the United States, high-speed broadband is not provided by a public utility, and current North Carolina State law prohibits governmental units from owning and operating broadband services.

When Village Park was built, a decision was made by the developer, Raymond McClinton, to open public right of way to any private broadband company meeting state and federal laws. In Village Park, the ROW generally resides within the 10-foot borders on either side of the street.

Village Park is presently served by AT&T and Charter/Spectrum for high speed Internet access (aka broadband) and other communications service. Service availability and speeds vary based on the availability of fiber connectivity and the providers' corporate policies for updating technology. Another potential provider of high speed Internet service is SkyRunner, Inc, which uses fixed wireless service rather the wired communications.

The Village Park Homeowners Association and its residents can have an impact on broadband services through speaking collectively with providers, monitoring the quality of service, and being engaged in legal changes that might affect our area. Village Park residents can advocate for comprehensive coverage, a competitive market so every part of the community has at least two providers, and high-value quality service.
